You need to cut the APRS guys some slack. I agree, it is by no means an end all solution to emergency communications (I am a member of an emcomm group here in Illinois) but I have seen it used successfully for non critical communications in an urban setting. In fact, if you want to get down to brass tacks even HF radio is at best a backup solution. True emergency comms usually relies on some form of satellite communication/tracking for obvious reasons. Don't forget, ham radio is a hobby for many people and is as much about the fun of playing with the electronics and the technologies as it is about preparing for some kind of disaster. People who are passionate about their interests frequently over value them (bowling anyone 🤣). So give them a break!

I've got most of my DX contacts on FT8. Even got Pakistan and Kazakhstan in the lof. I've learned quite a bit from running FT8 with Gridtracker. Seeing callsigns come across my computer helps me identify where a staion is when operating on SSB. The HAM's that don't do data modes just don't understand how efficient it is. Olivia for example, I've worked a station on the west coast of Australia one morning on 20m. I was running 50w and the VK station was running 20w. That's over 11K miles on the short path. Hell, I even had a round table one morning doing Olivia on 40m. One station was from Washington, the other was a VK and myself here in Tennessee. Everyone could decode each other just fine with no loss that I was aware of. Mike, if get the chance to work other data modes, please do so. PSK31 and Olivia is pretty active on 20 and 40m. Once in a while there's someone on 10 and 15m. As for RTTY, it's pretty much dead unless there's a contest going on. Once in a blue moon, one might make a contact on RTTY.

The last one about fender mounts disemboweling someone really got me laughing. If anyone got hit by a vehicle with a fender mounted antenna they have worse things to worry about than a piece of sheet metal protruding from under the hood. The mirrors on my truck stick out further than my fender mount as well.

People like doneanddone aren't stupid, they're lazy and that's worse. I can understand being unable to understand everything you need to get a license, but laziness is a choice. So many people out there choose ignorance and get butthurt when you call them jackasses for it.

I laughed at that last comment. As an EMT and been one for 12 years I've been to hundreds of crashes in my career, including some with Ham equipment. Never once have I seen the antenna mount disembowel someone. He probably shouldn't look at the some of the fire and EMS command vehicles in my area that have antenna mounts the same as yours. What a tool. Oh and as to his comment that Cybertrucks are banned in the EU because of their sharp curves, I wanna know what he has been smoking because it must be some good stuff. Cybertrucks are not banned in the EU but they likely won't be sold their because you need a special license to drive them due to their weight. I can only imagine what that last commenter looks like 🤣

ATAS120 is good when it works. But it has very high premature failure rate. If you haven't bought one yet, resist the temptation and go with Tarheel or Diamond screwdriver. You'll thank me later.

Whats truly sad about these people is that they forget the most important rule of ham radio: have fun! I prefer CW over FT8 not because of efficiency, but because I find it more engaging and fun than FT8. They are all fun, but I enjoy it more. If you disagree, that's totally fine too because at the end of the day we are both correct.

FT8: Gotta agree. When the bands suck and I cant make contacts I switch over from phone to FT8. May not get a lot of QSO's but I get log ins and that's all that really matters. And yeah, sometimes I dont want to listen to the 10th conversation of the day about the aches and pains and the weather...

and in Texas you have to complete a TPWD Certified Boater Education course to operate boats over 15 HP or wind powered boats over 14ft... and FT8 is fine. it's more efficient than CW in making a lot of contacts in a short period of time. but all you do is make the contact without no conversation. CW allows you to do a little more if you want to. plus if you want to operate HF in IARP areas, you have to be proficient in CW. you should learn CW. It's superfun!
